On July 9, 2013, IES researcher Aleksandar Zdravković, who currently works as an intern at the IMF in Washington, visited the Government of the District of Columbia on invitation from Dr. Patricia Elwood, Chief of Protocol and International Affairs of the Mayor's Office. On occasion, Aleksandar joined the delegation from Serbia which paid a study visit to Washington titled "Transparency, efficiency, and accountability in public spending: the role of independent institutions, executive and legislative power in the budget process in the USA." The delegation includes representatives of institutions responsible for public finance control (Committee on Finance, State Budget, and Control of Public Spending of National Assembly, State Audit, Fiscal Council). USAID organized the visit - Business Enabling Project (BEP). Aleksandar also works for and delivered a couple of training to employees of the Public Debt Authority and Treasury of the Ministry of Finance
Within the reception, a representative of the CFO Office delivered the presentation on good practices in the financial management of the District of Columbia, which moved Washington from a near-bankruptcy position in the nineties to one of the US cities with the highest budget surplus.
