Programme \"\"The Summer School of Economics 2010, hosted by the Institute of Economic Sciences, was officially opened this morning. The opening ceremony was attended by special guests, including Mr. Mlađan Dinkić, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development, Mr. Loup Brefort, the World Bank’s Country manager, Mr. Milko Štimac, President of the Securities’ Commission, Mr. James Stein, Acting director of the USAID’s mission to Serbia, Mr. Saša Hadžiahmetović from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, and Mr. Duško Vasiljević from the World Ban.

Prof Dejan Erić, director of the Institute of Economic Sciences, gave an introductory speech, welcoming the students and the guests, and presenting a brief overview of the history and activities of the Institute of Economic Sciences.

Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Mlađan Dinkić, was the first speaker, talking about the economic policy of the Serbian government in the wake of the global crises.

The second lecturer today was dr Barbara Kolm, director of the F.A. von Hayek Institute from Vienna, who spoke about concerns due to the public debt raising in Europe.

Prof Branko Milanović, Lead economist of the World Bank and professor at the University of Maryland, gave the final lecture today, talking about theories of inequality among countries and empirical results.

During the second day of the Summer School of Economics, dr Mark Gradstein of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev from Israel held his lectures. During the introductory lecture, professor Gradstein talked about indicators which suggested that there happened divergence among countries in terms of the levels of economic growth, as well as about diverse theoretical explanations of the determinants of economic growth. Later on, he put more insight into institutions as factors of economic growth of nations.

Today’s final lecture was held by Mr. Kaspar Richter, Senior economist of the World Bank. Mr. Richter talked about the effects of the global crises on new EU member states, as well as about prospects and policy options of these countrie

Professor Mark Gradstein held two lectures today. He proceeded with the analysis of the impact of institutions on economic growth, including overview of methodological issues that are commonly associated with the econometric analysis of this problem.

Representatives from the World Bank Office in Serbia held two lectures today. Mr. Duško Vasiljević presented an overview of the impact of the global crises on Serbia and other countries of the region, with the medium term outlook.

The final lecture today was held by the Head of the World Bank Office in Serbia, Mr. Loup Brefort on development economics.

Topics that Professor Bailey covered today included a brief history of the global economy and the credit crunch, introduction to industrial policy, economic approaches to environmental issues, and FDI in the transition.

Today the first lecture was given by Ms Snežana Samardžić-Marković, Minister of Youth and Sport of the Government of the Republic of Serbia. Ms Samardžić-Marković spoke about youth policies and sustainability of changes in transition.

The second lecturer at the Summer School was Professor Leandro Prados de la Escosura from the Universidad Carlos III, Spain. The topics that Professor Prados de la Escosura covered included economic performances in post-independence Latin America and economic growth.

The fourth lecture today was given by Professor Mihail Arandarenko from the Faculty of Economics, University of Belgrade. Professor Arandarenko spoke about labour market policy in Serbia.

Today the first two lectures were given by Professor Leandro Prados de la Escosura from the Universidad Carlos III, Spain. Professor Prados de la Escosura spoke about inequality and poverty, as well as about living standards in Latin America from the Western world perspective.

The third lecture today was given by Branko Milanović, Professor of the University of Maryland and lead economist of the World Bank in Washington. Professor Milanović gave the first part of lecture on globalization and global inequality between countries and among individuals.

The first lecture today was held by Professor Ljubomir Madžar, professor emeritus of the Belgrade University. He spoke about macroeconomic imbalances, unsustainability of economic growth and constraints on economic policy.

Afterwards, Professor Branko Milanović proceeded with his previous day’s lecture on globalization and global inequality between countries and amongindividuals.

Professor Leandro Prados de la Escosura has given his final lecture at this year’s Summer School. He spoke about contract enforcement, capital accumulation and Latin America’s decline.

The final lecture today was held by Mr. James Stein, from the USAID mission to Serbia. He talked about competitiveness, and particularly the competitive position of Serbia and activities of the USAID aimed at improving it.

The first lecture today was given by Mr. Milko Štimac, President of the Securities Commission. He talked about share holding.

The next lecturer was Mr. Matthias Schäfer, from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. He introduced the concept of social market economy to the students and spoke about the way it operates in Germany.

The last lecture today was held by Mr. Radovan Jelašić, Governor of the National Bank of Serbia. The main topic of his lecture was the monetary policy in Serbia, in particular the measures aimed at mitigating the effects of the financial crises.

The first lecture today was given by Mr. Bogdan Lissovolik, Resident Representative of the IMF in Serbia. He talked about economic outlook for Serbia and the region.

.The last lecture was held by Professor Branko Milanović. He discussed the issue of inequality in preindustrial societies, and its implications for institution building.

At the end of this year’s Summer School, Dr. Ivan Stošić, Assistant Director of the Institute of Economic Sciences, and Ms. Kosovka Ognjenović, Director of the Summer School of Economics, presented the students with the certificates.
