Plenary Session

Professor Dejan Eric, PhD, IES Director welcomed the participants and wished them a successful conference. , Prof. Žarko Obradović, PhD, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development opened the conference, and in his introductory speech he emphasized the importance of making strategical and operational decisions based on  precise, relevant and available primary data. He gave a special accent to data bases in social sciences and he gave a full support of competent ministry for realization of SERCIDA project.

Prof. Dr. Jasmin Komić, Minister of Science and Technology of Republika Srpska ,and  Mr. Jasmin Brankovic, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, supported the project SERSCIDA in name of Bosnia and Herzegovina and pointed to the strategic importance of creating social data archives in the countries in the region. Mr. Sasa Madacki, Director of the Center for Human Rights, gave a brief note on  the most important aspects of SERSCIDA project. The introductory session was closed by Dr. Denis Huschka, CEO German Data Forum, who gave a   lecture (on invitation)   on the importance of archiving data in the social sciences and practical problems in the functioning of digital archives.

1. Session

During the first session,  the presented  report “Country Assessment Reports: policy, infrastructure and researchers\' interest in data services“  gave the results  of extensive research within the SERSCIDA project, undertaken by the research teams of local partners:  Center for Human Rights, University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb and the Institute of Economic sciences, Belgrade. The report was  presented in the form of a comparative analysis of the results for all three countries according to the  areas covered by the  survey.

Dr Aleksandra Bradić-Martinović, IES, presented the previous practice of research data archiving   and researchers\' interest for the establishment of a national service (archive) data; Marijana Glavica, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, presented the existing research infrastructure and resources to build the national archives; Lejla Somun-Krupalija, Center for Human Rights , University of Sarajevo, presented the aspects of the analysis of the relevant legislation and potential sources of financing the national archives.The session was closed  by the representatives of Arhiva družboslovnih podatkov  from Ljubljana - Prof. Dr. Janez Stebe and Irena Irena Vipavc Brvar, who gave the history and the development and functioning of ADP

2. Session

The next session was opened by Hans Jørgen Marker, President of CESSDA (Council of European Social Science Data Archives) who presented  the activities and the projects implemented by this organization. Hilary Beedham & Peter Farago, PhD presented the activities of United Kingdom Data Archive & Swiss Foundation for Research in Social Sciences, respectively.

3. Session

During the third session, Prof. Daniela Andren, PhD  from Orebro University in Sweden  presented her  experiences  in working with research data in the social sciences. Instead of Tony Chapple from the United Kingdom, Office for National Statistics (ONS), who was not  able to attend the conference, Hilary Beedham presented the ONS paper on  archiving and  data distribution, gathered through primary research. The first day of the conference was closed by  Dr Miran Lavrič, Assistant Professor  and Prof. Dr. Sergei Flere from the  Faculty of Philosophy,  Maribor by the  presentation on the benefits of researchers and lecturers in social sciences that  are the results of  the national data archives existence.

March 22

The second day of the conference, dedicated to the Open Access (OA) initiative in science, was opened by the lecture on invitation of Iva Melinščak-Zlodi, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. Valentina Pelizzer, Oneworld - platform for Southeast Europe,
Valentina Pelizzer, Oneworld - Platform for Southeast Europe, in her speech,  stressed the importance of open access to the Internet and  free dissemination of knowledge. Alen Vodopijevec and Jadranka Stojanovski, PhD  from the Institute Rudjer Boskovic  in Zagreb  presented two approaches to the implementation of OA and current progress in this area in Croatia. The conference was closed by the speech of  Biljana Kosanovic who presented the current activities of the National Library of Serbia in implementing the  open access in Serbia.

International conference: "Opening Data Services in Social Sciences"

March 21

On 21 March 2013 at 9.30 a.m., the international conference "OPENING DATA SERVICES IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES" was opened at hotel Moskva, within the realization of FP7 project SERCIDA. The  Institute of Economic Sciences is hosting the conference that gathers other partners of the SERSCIDA Project: Center for Human Rights, University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Swiss Foundation for Research in Social Sciences, The UK Data Archives of the University of Essex, Swedish National Data Service of the University of Gothenburg, Arhiv družboslovnih podatkov, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia and the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, Croatia.
